Unlike other heart diseases, congestive heart disease is more of an acquired disease than a congenital defect. It is a disease that an adult gets as a result of what he does to his body. Drinking too much alcohol, hypertension, and high level of blood cholesterol in the system are seen as the main culprits in weakening the heart's muscle. A weak heart muscle has a weak pumping action; thus, there is a deficiency of blood supply in all parts of the body, including the major organs such as the brain, liver and lungs.

How can one stay away from acquiring congestive heart disease? The answer lies in what you eat and what you do. Consider these:

Eat oatmeal everyday. Studies show that oatmeal works like a sponge that seeps and wipes away excess fats in the body. Every morning, why not make it a habit to eat a bowlful of oatmeal? You won't only help your heart in the process; you will lose weight, too.

Eat more fish and less red meat. Unlike red meat, fish does not contain bad cholesterol that clogs heart arteries. Clogged heart arteries are the leading cause of congestive heart disease.

Also, fish fat contains Omega 3 known to fight bad cholesterol, thus keeping veins in all parts of the body free from hardened cholesterol.

Drink red wine or green tea everyday. Red wine stimulates blood circulation and helps in burning excess fats in the body. The same way goes with green tea.

Walk in a treadmill at least 15 minutes a day. Cardiovascular exercises such as brisk walking, running, cycling, and jogging promote to a better heart pumping action. The heart cannot work optimally if the body is at rest most of the time. Exercise allows the heart to receive more oxygen from the lungs, since lungs open up and take more oxygen when in an active state.

Be idle for 15 minutes a day. Based on studies, Type A personalities are more likely to suffer from a heart attack. They regard small and trivial matters as big, try to do so many things at once and get frustrated easily. If you belong to this group, find the time to quiet your inner self. Meditate or just laze on the porch. Your quiet time will keep you away from congestive heart disease and from excess mental and emotional baggage.
