The term itself causes grief and fear. Congenital heart disease is a life threatening condition found in newborns caused by the under development of a part of the structure of the heart or its vessels which causes a defect, thus unable to perform in a normal manner.

What happens when a baby has a congenital heart disease is that the undeveloped blood vessels will experienced an obstructed flow of the blood and will push back the flow into the heart which will cause pressure and more strain to it. When this happens, the heart may develop a hole due to the strain or create a link between two arteries which are usually disconnected from each other.

Unfortunately, congenital heart disease is a very common condition. A lot of babies experience this dilemma. Fortunately though, with the aid of modern technology, congenital heart disease can now be diagnosed in as early as the middle of the second trimester of pregnancy using ultrasound screenings.

Usually, babies with heart disease undergo surgery to correct the problem. That’s why early diagnosis is important to avoid the heart from weakening from all the strain.  There are other treatments that are done as well but this is determined by the doctor. Treatments are based on what caused the congenital heart disease.

Babies that have undergone congenital heart disease surgery needs to be given a regular checkup all through their lives. They have to take medications as well to ensure that their heart functions normally.
