Most heart valve disease is congenital, meaning a person may have been born with a narrow heart valve, irregular sized valve flaps, stiff or leaky valves. People with a congenital valvular disease may have known of their condition since birth or have only come to know of their disease when they reach adulthood. In fact, at times, some people die without even knowing that they have heart valve anomaly. The reason for this is that some valvular diseases do not have any symptoms at all.

Some people, however, acquire heart valve disease because of complications from another disease such as heart muscle disease, coronary artery disease and heart attack. A child who has suffered from a rheumatic heart disease because of a simple strep throat will likely to have a valvular disease when he or she reaches adulthood. Endocarditis or bacterial infection of the heart caused by germs that enters the heart valve during dental procedures or surgery on any parts of the body is another cause of an acquired valvular disease. The bacterial infection weakens and inflames the heart, scarring the heart's valves and its leaflets. Scarring of the valves lead to blood regurgitation, which is the cause of most valvular diseases symptoms.

A heart valve disease is best diagnosed with laboratory tests such 2D-Echo (echocardiogram) or MRI. With these machines, the doctor will be able to see any irregularities on the heart, including its small aortas and valves. Shortness of breath after a short brisk walk, dizziness when changing positions (getting up from bed or sitting down and standing up), feeling of fatigue during the afternoons, palpitations, skipped heartbeat, irregular heartbeat (heartbeat going fast or slow even when the person is stationary) are the common symptoms of a person with a valvular disease. If you feel any of these symptoms, in combination most especially, schedule a consultation with a cardiologist for an assessment. If a murmur or swishing sound is heard from a stethoscope, you might be suffering from a heart valve disease.
